Colton Composite Team is gearing up to start the new year on two-wheels! Fundraising has been successful and we will be starting out 2nd Semester with our first team practices.
We plan to have "tech days" learning about bike care and setup, "skill drills" learing how to handle our bikes with proper technique and "training rides" where we get out there and ride ride ride!
I'm excited for the kids on the team and eager to get them started. There have been many steps along the way to get the team set up. . . but 2012 is our year!
I'll continue to seek out community business sponsors this holiday break to partner with Colton Composite Team.
If you know of a business that may want to become a sponsor/advertiser with our team to help make this a reality for our awesome kids then please contact me.
Thanks and have a great Christmas season!
We are the "Colton District Composite Mountain Bike Racing Team". The BHS segment has now branched out to include our sister schools Colton and Grand Terrace. Our goal is to give all students a chance to grow physically and mentally in a positive way through the fun and challenging sport of cycling.

Congratulations to our Team leaders!
Congratulations to those students chosen as our Team leaders in Thursday's meeting.
President: Hugo
Treasurer: Isaac
Secretary: Amber
Student Council Rep: Antonio
Those other team members are no less importatnt and will be called on to assist in fundraising, setups, activities and races but these individuals will be our Team ambassadors.
We covered a lot of material in the meeting this thursday, here is a recap of the meeting minutes:
1. Team photo taken, will need to get photos of the absent team members as well.
2. Smiles Sweet Shop is our first local sponsor and we will be partnering with them for fundraising soon.
3. Budget - we raised enough to pay for Head coach participation in the League Leadership Summit and are on our way to raising enough for the Team registration. Still more to go so share any ideas and contacts you may have.
4. Elections were conducted for our ASB requirements.
5. Article "Lost Thoughts" was distributed, come pick one up if you were absent. Head injuries are no laughing matter, always wear your helmet!
6. Fundraising events -
November Gourmet Sweets Fundraising - Everyone needs to sell as many as they can to support the team.
November 13 Cyclocross Sales Booth. We need you to set aside the time on Sunday to come with us and sell drinks and food at the Cyclocross race in Chino. Bring your family so they can have some fun watching as well! It's a nice 'day at the park'.
7. Bloomington Cycling is now part of the larger "COLTON COMPOSITE" Mountain Bike Team. This means BHS, CHS and GTHS students will be able to race as ONE TEAM, the "COLTON COMPOSITE" team. We'll train together and race together representing our Colton District and our School. I'll be contacting CHS to see if there are teachers and students who will be joining us this year.
What you need to do?
1. See me if you were absent for photo and article to read.
2. Set time aside to help on Nov 13 at Cyclocross in Chino.
Here's a sample logo we may use.

Bloomington Cycling a part of Colton District Composite!
Announcement!
The Mountian Bike Team is starting here at Bloomington High school but will be registering with the SoCal League as a "District Composite Team". After some discussion I think this will be a better option for our team's first few years competing in the SoCal League.
What this means is that the Mountain Bike Team will pull from all three high schools in the Colton Joint Unified School District. Bloomington HS, Colton HS and (next year) Grand Terrace HS students will participate, train and race as the Colton District Composite Team. Over the next three years we will work to build up each school site to have a coach and racers as a sustainable school site team.
I'm excited about this opportunity for our students at Bloomington and Colton as well as Grand Terrace next year. Our ability to fundraise will be greater, our community exposure will be greater, our ability to expose students to the sport of cycling will be greater. Our ability to promote healthy lifestyle choices among the students in our entire district is much greater as well. Funding remains the same, and any materials purchased by the Team, such as jerseys, helmets, bikes etc will be of a common design so as to maximize our resources. This is a much smarter way to use the resources we have to reach as many students as possible.
In practical terms, there will be little change for the immediate future. As the head coach I am located at Bloomington High School which will serve as our home base. I will be sending information to the other schools to generate participation among the staff and students.
So what do we do now? Spread the word! I'll be trying to recruit assistant coaches from Colton High School who will be able to spread the word to the CHS student body. Other than that we'll keep pushing forward with the team plans and the fundraising and seeking sponsors for the Colton District Composite Mountain bike Team.
Get out there, strap on your helmet and RIDE HARD!

Don's Bike Shop Rialto helps BHS Mountain Bike Team go to the races.
Thanks to Don's Bike Shop of Rialto for lending us their two trainers so that we could set up some stationary bike "races" at our Homecoming Tailgate party on campus.
After two back to back races I realized just how hard of a challenge it can be to sprint for 1 minute on a trainer! I protected my title as coach but I don't think I could have held that rookie off in one more race!
Here's what it looked like at the setup, sorry there are no action shots. I'll remember that for next time.
As proof of concept I think it went well. With a bigger crowd I can see some potential in this set up. Now that we've done it once we know how to do it better.
I think the bike trailer would have been excellent today to haul all this stuff across the campus! Now why didn't I think of that this morning!?
Thanks to me team for getting this all set up. I know were doing a lot of time consuming fundraisers but we'll get some sponsors and your hard work will really pay off.
Please see the calendar for more details on when events are taking place.
MANDATORY TEAM MEETING THURSDAY OCTOBER 6th.
Thanks to those Bruins who have been buying from us and to my students who hunt me down to buy something to support the team. You all are great, keep developing that Bruin team spirit!

So here's the weekly info you need to know:
1. We need everyone to DONATE sodas and candy to sell after school. - When the sodas are donated the club gets a lot more money for our effort of selling. Please BRING SODAS or CAPRI SUN or BULK CANDY bar/M&Ms to me ASAP.
2. MANDATORY MEETING THISTHURSDAY 29th! - If you want to be on the team then you must show up. You must also think about when you'll be able to stay after school to help sell during the next two weeks. Lets get that cash rolling in! Tell all your friends to come and spend a dollar a day! Spread the word that we'll be here for the next two weeks and tell them to come to the rally!
3. Club elections are needed. We need to have students who will be responsible for various tasks in the club. This is YOUR TEAM so YOU need to make it happen. I need your help to put our school on the map and racing in the league.
4. Homecoming Rally Friday 30th 2:30 to 5? - We will have TWO tables in the rally after school. One to sell our drinks and candy. This table needs two people to run it. The other table is for our MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE! races. We'll have stationary bikes for people to pay to race on and challenge their friends. We'll need about two of you to run that as well. So again, all hands are needed! This can be a really cool way for your friends to challenge you or each other to see who is the fastest in a 1 minute sprint race. Anyone that wnats to challenge me can have at it as well! I think we'll have two bikes set up but i may bring a third if i can fit it. This can be awesome!
5. I'm creating a calendar of events that you'll need to have on hand and I'll also need to develop a time for a parent meeting in the evening where I introduce them to the sport and the requirements/responsibilities of all members. This is a brand new thing we are creating here, so you are part of something special!
If you are looking to get a bike then I'll try to help you make the best choice. Ask before spending!
Make sure to wear your helmet whenever you ride.
Get out there and Ride Hard!

SUMMER IS HERE!
Congratulations to all graduating seniors. Good luck to all continuing students and all you incoming freshmen... get ready!
Summer is a great time to get some relaxing done, reset your mind and get ready for a new school year.
Think about what worked well this year and what you can do to improve next year.
While I won't be teaching I am certainly not going to be idle. This summer I am in the process of building up the Mountain Bike program in what ways I can: seeking sponsors, business partners, donations, grants etc.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS ESSENTIAL:
We receive no money from the school so our kids have to help raise all the funds for the team equipment and functions, insurance, etc. (I receive no stipend for coaching)
WHAT WE NEED:
Good condition cycling clothing, mountain bikes (front shock preferred), spare parts, helmets, rear wheel style bike trainers, 26" mountain bike tires, 26x1.75 - 2.25 tubes.
Businesses who wish to advertise on our jerseys as sponsors of the team please contact me. We have set rates for advertising so don't pass up this opportunity to advertise your local business.
Have a great summer and get some riding done in this beautiful weather. Always wear a helmet, bring water, and wear sunscreen if riding in the middle of the day.

Luau was a big success!
Thanks to Adrian, Mayra, Susana and John who all stayed late on their own time to help work the booth we had set up for the Luau. We were able to sell nearly all the chips and nacho cheese we brought for a nice profit. Next time maybe we'll tackle the ice drinks that were a bi hit too! Great to see so many students hanging around after school supporting the clubs and just having fun after a long day of classes.
Here's the team in action!
John set up camp, Adrian loved holding all that money, Mayra gave service with a smile and Susana was #1 saleswoman offering "free cheese!" to everyone.
Great job team, I can't wait to get on those bikes and start riding next season. We're off to a great start and with the dedication YOU are showing we're going to have a blast!
If you have a bike, get out there and ride some this summer.
Obey all traffic rules and ride SAFELY and ALWAYS wear a HELMET!
If you do not have one let me know, I have two available right now.

BHS UNITY!
The senseless and ridiculous act of arson that burned the Admin offices of BHS this weekend will do nothing to dampen our spirits! Bruin Pride is too strong for that. We'll be even stronger and more united as a school after this test of resolve. School starts on time Monday, a mere fire wont keep us from performing our duties to teach and improve our community.
We've lost the years of sports plaques but we've not lost the pride of those wins! Lets put some more wins on the walls!
BHS Cycling - 2012 is our year to build back the Bruin legacy by bringing some trophies home!
The new face of BHS is YOU!... and stronger than ever!

Big THANKS to www.SoCalTrailRiders.org members!
Spent the morning driving out to Fullerton after hearing about a Mountain Bike swap meet that members of www.socaltrailriders.org were putting on. I spent some money on some parts I've been looking for.
I even found a nice balance bike for my 1 year old from Ian at www.TykesBikes.com
The bigger surprise for me was how willing these members were to donate when they found out about Bloomington HS Mountain Bike Team. I got great deals on parts, donations of tires, wheels, cranks, components, etc! Good bunch of guys and gals! Thanks a million!
Having team bikes is a great way for us as a team to bring new riders in. Most students are riding BMX style bikes and will just now start getting into mountain bikes as an option. Cycling of all types have a "purchasing barrier" that often hinders new riders from getting involved. If we can expose our students to mountain biking with a loaned bike and a skills/intro program then we can get many more young people excited about this great sport.
We can't do it without great community support like this! Thanks again!

Gaining momentum -
Thanks to my dedicated volunteers who stayed late after school to welcome next year's 9th graders to BHS. You didn't have to stay but you did, good job! Two team bikes caught people's eyes and everyone's response was basically the same "Cool!"
We're getting our name out there and building momentum for next season! Great work!
Monday 16th meeting -
2:30 in room 595
We'll finalize our fundraising plans and responsibilities for the Luau on the 26th.
We will not have a club field trip to the Pro Race on the 22nd but I will have flyers for the race so you have information on the times and location so you can go with your family and watch some awesome racing.
Disclaimer: WE WILL NOT do "Downhill" style racing in this club but it is an EXTREME form of MTB racing that is very fun to watch.
SEE YOU THERE!

Disclaimer: WE WILL NOT do "Downhill" style racing in this club but it is an EXTREME form of MTB racing that is very fun to watch.
SEE YOU THERE!

Monday meetings!
We'll be meeting as a Team on Mondays after school in room 595. We actually have to move quickly to get a few things set up for the end of the year! This is our agenda:
May 11 - Freshman Orientation
We need a few student volunteers to man the table to let all the incoming Freshmen know they can get involved and do some awesome training and racing next year. Starts at 5:30pm! (Let me know if you are staying all day and bring a few bucks so I can buy dinner for us if you want.)
May 21 - Southridge USA PRO RACE in Fontana!
We'd like the Team to show up and hang out and get to know each other with an awesome day watching the professionals rip it up in our own backyard! We'll need everyone to pitch in with drinks and food and we'll have a great time. Bring the whole Family! It's NOT an official club event but it's in our own backyard and you won't want to miss it! Here is the event flyer: http://www.southridgeusa.com/images/Cal-State2011_v3.pdf
May 26 - BHS LUAU
We're going to have a table at the Luau and we'll be selling food to raise funds for the team. I'll bring some bikes and we may be able to have some "bike games" for students to try. This is your chance to show the school that we mean business for the 2012 race season!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
While we plan to be fully active and racing in the 2011-2012 School Year we are in the "building phase" right now. Students will be working hard to raise funds for this club and we need your help as parents and community members. Our students' academic and athletic success depends on family and community support.
